Stellantis bet hard on Belgium’s Punch Powertrain, creating a joint venture to make their electrified dual-clutch transmissions (eDCTs) in Metz, France, and Turin, Italy. They are to be used in all Stellantis mild-hybrids (except Rams) and plug-in hybrids. The company said the move was intended to support Stellantis’ increased range of hybrid cars.
Today, Stellantis announced that it had purchased Punch’s shares, and now owns the factories.
The eDCT includes a 21 kW motor which can power the car up to half the time in urban conditions, under low demand, allowing the engine to shut off. The transmission is relatively light and cheap for its torque rating, and may be used in the next Jeep Compass—the only STLA Medium car so far promised to the United States and Canada, though that would leave a great deal of untouched capacity at Brampton.
David Zatz started what was to become the world’s biggest, most comprehensive Mopar site in 1994 as he pursued a career in organizational research and change. After a chemo-induced break, during which he wrote car books covering Vipers, minivans, and Jeeps, he returned with Patrick Rall to create StellPower.com for daily news, and to set up MoTales for mo’ tales.
