Stellantis still more American than Ford—in parts

According to a recent USA Today story, Stellantis’ FCA US division, or Former Chrysler, plus Alfa Romeo and Fiat, actually uses more US or Canadian parts than Ford—40% vs 35%. This comes as Ford enthusiasts have been posting misleading statements about all Fords being made in the United States (they aren’t).

Ford does assemble 74% of its vehicles in the United States, which is the most of any company but Tesla which has only three assembly locations (US, Germany, and China), but they use more foreign parts in each car. Stellantis’ FCA US makes half its cars and trucks in the United States, in terms of final assembly, with 28% made in Italy—again, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and the imported Dodge Hornet. That figure, from 2024, also includes the Jeep Renegade, and is likely much lower so far in 2025.

Ford final-assembles 5% of its cars and trucks in Canada, 5% in China, and 16% in Mexico. The former Chrysler, in addition to Italy, final-assembles 11% of its vehicles in Mexico and 11% in Canada, with none sourced from China.

Of the American companies, GM is a mixed bag, using even fewer US-and-Canadian parts (just 25%) but final-assembling 74%, the same percentage as Ford, in the United States. After that, like Ford, they make 5% in Canada, 5% in China, and 16% in Mexico—the exact same figures as Ford.

Tesla fans claim that all the parts are made in the US, but in fact only 69% of their parts are made in the US and Canada. However, Tesla’s recent expansion has been in China and Germany.

Ironically, Honda outdoes all “domestic three” in US assembly and in parts use. 57% of its parts come from the US and Canada, and 75% are assembled in the US.

Toyota is the least American of the companies many think of as largely-American. Just 23% of parts come from the United States or Canada, and 30% of the cars are assembled in the US; 59% are brought in from Japan, and the rest from Canada and Mexico (these number sound wrong, given that Toyota has plants in nearly every state).

Hyundai may be the most vulnerable of the Top Five automakers (which do not include Stellantis), importing 71% of its vehicles from South Korea and 3% from Mexico; just 12% of Hyundai parts are made in the US and Canada.
