Insiders: Hemi is returning, in a new place

According to a trusted insider, but not confirmed by official sources, Stellantis is working on making Hemi V8 engines other than the truck 6.4 again, with production intended to be “ASAP” rather than waiting for a new V8 design.

For the first time, the Hemi would be made in the United States, mainly because Saltillo Engine is taken up with Hurricane and truck 6.4 Hemi production. The company has a great deal of extra capacity in Michigan factories in Dundee and Trenton, at least one of which will also make battery trays for electric cars.

Adding V8 production will have a high cost, since most of the machinery used to make it was rededicated to making high-performance six-cylinders.

With the EPA under orders to slash regulations of all kinds, Stellantis can ignore its previous “green” pledges and install V8s in, at least, Ram pickups, Jeep Grand Cherokees and Wagoneers, and Dodge Durangos. The 5.7 Hemi produced almost as much power as the entry-level Hurricane Six, with roughly 10% lower mileage. The 6.4 Hemi (“392”) produced around 65 hp less than the high-output Hurricane Six, again with around 10% lower mileage.
