Hydrogen Ram 5500 in production, coming to USA

According to Wards Auto, a fuel cell-powered Ram 5500 with electric motors is already being produced in Poland, and a North American version is coming to Mexico with hopes of getting 100,000 sales per year.  Fuel cell vehicles (such as the Cummins truck shown below) run on electrical power, but use hydrogen and oxygen to power the motors rather than battery-stored energy.

It seems that the Ram 5500 might be sold as a pickup as well as a chassis cab, at least in Europe.

Jean-Michel Billig, head of Stellantis’ fuel cell program, told Welt am Sonntag that Ram wanted to have 40% of its commercial vehicle sales in Europe running without gasoline or diesel fuel. The advantages of fuel cells over battery-electrics are lower weight, higher payloads, and much faster fills.

Toyota is racing to market with a fuel cell vehicle in Europe and is likely to sell it in the United States as well. Hydrogen powered medium-duty trucks such as the Ram 5500 were announced years ago.
