Stellantis (FCA US) reported a 15% 2023-to-2024 full year drop in sales, despite gains in the fourth quarter. Total sales were just 1.3 million, down from 1.5 million last year.
The major drops unsurprisingly came from discontinued vehicles. The Charger and Challenger had sales of around 120,000 in the United States in 2023, which fell to around 61,000 in 2024 with production stopping in late 2023. The Jeep Renegade dropped from 26,000 to around 8,000; and the Cherokee fell from around 24,600 to 2,800. A slow production ramp-up on the new Ram 1500 was also damaging; Ram pickup sales fell from 444,926 to 373,120. The ProMaster City’s demise hurt a little, with sales dropping from 12,900 to 50.
The Grand Cherokee didn’t suffer that much from the loss of its V8, dropping by around 30,000 sales—12%. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, on the other hand, both gained ground. Indeed, there was some good news, with the Compass rising by 16%, Wrangler nearly steady despite increased competition, the first 231 Wagoneer S models being sold, minivans staying roughly even, and Hornet doubling in sales; but it was not enough to avoid drops in every brand but Fiat.
Jeep dropped by 9%, Ram by 19%, Chrysler by 7%, Dodge by 29%, and Alfa Romeo by 19%. Fiat gained because 500X sales somehow rose by four cars (from 554 to 558) and the 500e went on sale, with 970 sold. That was enough to more than double Fiat sales, which says more about Fiat sales than the “success” of the 500e.
FCA US put a good light on things, noting that retail sales increased slightly in the fourth quarter and that it maintained the highest PHEV market share (41%), at least through October 31. The Jeep Recon and Ramcharger are slated to go on sale in 2025.
FCA US will go into 2025 better equipped, with the Charger finally ramping up production, the Wagoneer S apparently starting to get into customers’ hands, and a more reasonable pricing being phased in.
