Some Canada, Mexico tariffs paused for another month (corrected)

Today, Donald Trump paused most Canadian and Mexican tariffs for a month [update:] but only on items covered by the former NAFTA treaty, currently dubbed USMCA.

The President does not normally have authority to impose tariffs on countries which have free trade agreements with the United States, but can do so in a state of emergency. Trump declared that the movement of a few pounds of fentanyl across the border constituted an emergency, though tons of the drug are shipped through the nation’s ports.

The move came after Trump spoke with Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum.
