Earlier this week, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares hosted an online press conference to formally introduce the STLA Frame chassis platform – the chassis that will serve as the underpinnings for the upcoming Ram REV and Ramcharger. We have not gotten any new details, but the formal introduction suggests that we are getting closer to the debut of the heavily anticipated Ramcharger, which is the company’s first range-extended electric-vehicle (REEV). However, this same platform can be used for additional powerplants, including a traditional gas model, a hybrid system and even hydrogen propulsion.
For those who are unaware, the STLA Frame chassis platform is designed to underpin full-sized trucks and SUVs – most notably the upcoming Ram REV (full electric) and the Ramcharger (electric with a gas engine that charges the system). This chassis platform is engineered to deliver around 500 miles of range in all-electric form while the Ramcharger is expected to yield 690 miles of range with a full tank of gasoline and a full charge. The platform is also capable of hauling up to 2,700 pounds and towing up to 14,000 pounds (when properly configured), while being able to sprint from a stop to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. This platform can also safely ford up to 24 inches of water, so the STLA Frame trucks and SUVs will be able to perform off-road as well.
The STLA Frame platform in electric form is powered by a pair of electric drive modules (EDMs) which are each capable of providing 250kW of power, or 335 horsepower, for a total system output of roughly 670 horsepower. With an EDM at each axle, these trucks and SUVs will have standard all-wheel-drive, but the batteries can do more than just move the vehicle bi-directional charging – with the ability to charge other EVs or even power your home. As for charging the vehicle itself, those STLA Frame trucks and SUVs with the 400-volt system can gain up to 50 miles per 10 minutes of charging (using a DC fast charger) while the 800-volt system builds up to 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.
“Like STLA Medium and STLA Large, STLA Frame combines an unprecedented range with new levels of capability and performance to offer best-in-class range, payload and towing for our customers who need reliable and powerful trucks and SUVs, to haul their families or power their businesses,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. “With full EV and extended-range EV tech coming soon, we’re bringing ‘no compromise’ solutions to buyers who may be hesitant on trying their first electric vehicle. We’re proud of this engineering marvel and look forward to seeing it come to life in our upcoming product blitz on Jeep and Ram.”
Finally, here are the basic dimensions of the STLA Frame platform, which will be launched in the form of the aforementioned Ram REV and Ramcharger, along with an unspecified large Jeep.
-Overall length range: 216-234 inches (5,488-5,941 mm)
