Jeep has opened orders for its The North Face brand edition, which has AWD and a new PHEV powertrain along with more impressive offroad chops.
The Avenger, based closely on the Peugeot 2008, is smaller than the Renegade and made mostly for Europe. It was already selling in battery electric form and with a mild-hybrid 1.2 liter setup, producing 99 hp, launched in February. The EV was rated at 154 hp. This new edition is one of two Avenger models to have a more powerful 4xe setup.
The car was European Car of the Year for 2023. While it comes with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain™ system, existing versions of the French-designed, Poland-made Jeep have only mildly impressive off-road specifications—7.9 inches of ground clearance, 20° approach angle, and 32° departure angle. The EV version is front wheel drive only. The new 4xe setup has a 22° approach, 21° breakover, and 35° departure angle, with 210mm of ground clearance (8.7 inches), which is far more respectable. A 22.7:1 reducer on the rear axle provides 1900 Nm of rear wheel torque, allowing for slopes up to 40% on gravel, and up to 20% traction with no grip on the front axle. Selec-Terrain controls the all wheel drive’s power distribution; the rear axle can disengage to increase fuel economy.
The North Face Edition is apparently above the other 4xe setup, dubbed Upland, which appears to be a play on Overland (the first mass producer of jeeps was Willys-Overland, which very nearly made the first Chrysler cars). The 4xe engine remains the 1.2 liter turbo, but with this new version, total power otuput is 136 hp with the twin 21kW motors at front and rear.
Avenger 4xe has a top speed of 194 km/h, 10 km/h faster than the existing hybrid; 0-62 mph comes in 9.5 seconds, according to the company. Off-road worthiness is increased with a sun glare reducing optional hood sticker, reinforced bumpers, LED reflector headlamps, and silver skid plates.
