General Motors has given up on robotaxis, folding the Cruise LLC engineering teams into their own general engineering group. The Cruise technologies will be folded into Super Cruise, GM’s highly regarded self-driving setup, which is available on over 20 vehicles.
This 2021 Escalade might or might not have Super Cruise.
While Cruise made advances in autonomous driving, CEO Mary Barra believed that further spending on the company would not make sense, and that what Cruise engineers learned could be better applied to regular cars.
General Motors owned 90% of Cruise, but had a deal that allowed it to buy 97% of the shares. The company is now going to work on buying the remaining 3%. Not keeping Cruise going will save GM $1 billion per year, according to the company press release.
